More Details:

The performance features George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Part III. Composed in 1741, the oratorio is Handel's most famous work and is among the most popular works in the Western choral literature.

The concert also features Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata 29 Wir danken dir Got Sinfonia (with organ solo and orchestra) and the Chamber Singers in a performance of “Große Orgelmesse” from Joseph Haydn's Missa In honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae.

ABOUT THE ENSEMBLES:

The University Choral Ensembles, the Concert Choir and the Chamber Singers, exist as independent groups and as separate classes, although the groups sometimes join forces for performance of large works locally. The Concert Choir is a 60-75 voice group of singers from the University Community and community at large. The group performs at least once during each semester, often in combination with orchestra, on campus or in the community. The members of the Chamber Singers are selected by audition and the group rehearses two times a week. Performances include local concerts, short tours during the year, as well as radio and television performances. A hybrid group, the Chamber Choir, does extensive touring, including a bi-annual European tour and the annual Earth Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.

Among the stated goals of the choral ensembles program are the experiences of a variety of musical styles and performance opportunties as well as the development of singing and choral musicianship skills needed for a lifetime of choral singing.
