“What I produce is due to my understanding of music and to my sorrows.” - Franz Schubert
Chamber Music Wilmington presents Schubert 1828.
Experience a transcendental musical journey into the life of Franz Schubert during 1828, his last and most prolific year. Scores of songs, great chamber masterworks, plus some of his most beloved piano miniatures date from this period. For some, the monumental String Quintet in C is the greatest chamber piece ever written with its rare and gloriously sonorous ensemble of quartet with additional cello. Cellist Emanuel Gruber, soprano Tamara Matthews, Barbara McKenzie and the Degas Quartet present this intimate “Schubertiade”.
THE DEGAS QUARTET
The Degas Quartet currently holds the position of Quartet-in-Residence with the Western Piedmont Symphony in Hickory, North Carolina. The four members are British violinist James Dickenson, his wife and fellow violinist Tamaki Higashi of Kagoshima, Japan, Scots violist Simon Ertz, and hailing from Texas, cellist Philip von Maltzahn. Since their founding at the Bowdoin International Music Festival in 1999, the Degas Quartet has emerged as the most exciting young string quartet on stage today. Renowned for energetic performances of the classical and contemporary quartet repertoire, the Degas Quartet plays with vibrant intensity and exceptional musicianship.
Joining the quartet will be cellist Emanuel Gruber, soprano Tamara Matthews and and pianist Barbara McKenzie.
