Katherine Buckner Lecture Series and the UNCW Department of Creative Writing present visiting fiction writer George Singleton, reading from his new novel



WILMINGTON, N.C.—George Singleton, distinguished visiting fiction writer at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, will read from his new novel Work Shirts for Madmen at 8 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 26, in Randall Library Auditorium on the UNCW campus. Singleton’s reading is part of the Buckner Lecture Series, established by Charles F. Green, III., alumnus of UNCW class of 
1971, in honor of his friend, Katherine K. Buckner. Green’s generosity has made it possible for both the UNCW English and Creative Writing departments to invite prominent guest lecturers and writers to UNCW such as George Singleton.

This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow, along with a book signing courtesy of Pomegranate Books.

George Singleton has published more than 100 stories in magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, Playboy, Book, Zoetrope, Glimmer Train, Georgia Review, Shenandoah, Southern Review, and North American Review. His stories have been anthologized in seven editions of New Stories from the South, plus Writers Harvest 2, A Dixie Christmas, They Write Among Us, 20 Over 40, and Behind the Short Story: from First to Final Draft. His nonfiction has appeared in Oxford American, and the anthologies Best Food Writing 2005 and Dog is My Co-pilot.



Singleton’s the author of four collections of shorts stories: These People Are Us (2001), The Half-Mammals of Dixie (2002), Why Dogs Chase Cars (2004), and Drowning in Gruel (2006). His novel, Novel, was published in 2005. A new novel, Work Shirts for Madmen, is forthcoming from Harcourt in fall 2007.



Singleton lives in Dacusville, S.C., and teaches at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. He has received the National Scholastic Portfolio Writing Teacher of the Year award three times for his students’ winning works.

• Tim Bass, Rebecca Lee, and Sarah Messer to read from their work on ‘All Hallow’s Eve’ 12 noon, Fri. Oct. 27, at St. James Parish, 25 S. 3rd St., downtown Wilmington.

• Rebecca Lee, fiction writer and associate professor of creative writing at UNCW, will read from her novel The City Is a Rising Tide (Simon & Schuster, 2006) 8 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 2, in Dobo Hall 103 (Dobo Auditorium) on the UNCW campus.
