Artist Recital Series: Flute and Strings

Department of Music faculty members Mary Jo White (flute), Joseph Brunjes (viola) and Richard Thomas (cello) join special guests Doug Merritt (violin), Adrian Anagnost (violin) and Nancy Brennand (harp) for a program featuring works for flute and strings by Debussy, Mozart, Rossini and Ginestera.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Mary Jo White is the Assistant Professor of Flute and Theory at UNC-Wilmington and principal flutist of the Wilmington Symphony. She recently appeared as a soloist with the Wilmington Symphony performing Carl Nielsen’s Flute Concerto. An active performer throughout the region, Dr. White also plays regularly with the UNCW Faculty Woodwind Quintet and other faculty chamber groups. In November 2006, she presented a lecture-recital on the flute music of Albert Roussel at the national College Music Society conference in Quebec City. As a winner of the 2006 NFA Performers Competition, Dr. White played in a concert of Newly Published Music at the National Flute Convention in Pittsburgh in August 2006. Her degrees include a Bachelors in flute performance from East Carolina University, a Masters in flute performance from Michigan State University, and a doctorate in flute performance from Boston University where she studied with Doriot A. Dwyer. Her prior positions include Instructor of Flute at Boston College, Assistant Professor of Flute at Central Michigan University and Instructor of Flute at Truman State University. She was also the Principal Flute for the Alma and Traverse City Symphonies in Michigan, and Second Flute/Piccolo for the Lansing Symphony.
Doug Merritt is currently on faculty at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville. His orchestral performance career has been with the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Shreveport Symphony and the Huntsvillle Symphony. He holds a Bachelor of Music from North Carolina School of the Arts and and a Master of Music from Cleveland Institute of Music. Currently he plays in the Long Bay Symphony and the Wilmington Symphony and enjoys playing chamber music with local musicians.
A native of Wilmington, NC, Adrian Anagnost has played in the Tallis Chamber Orchestra, the Oberlin College-Community String Orchestra, and the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. She studied violin with Christina Lazaridou and Nancy McAllister and attended Oberlin College, where she earned BA degrees in art history and chemistry.
Joseph Brunjes is a Wilmington native who joined the string faculty in 2004. He holds a Graduate Professional Diploma in conducting from the Hartt School, a Master of Music degree in conducting from the North Carolina School of the Arts, and both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in violin from the North Carolina School of the Arts. He is a violist in the Long Bay Symphony, violinist of the Atlantean Trio, and founder and conductor of the Oleander Chamber Orchestra.
Richard Thomas studied cello at the Cleveland Institute of Music, De Pauw University, University of North Texas, and received the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of South Carolina. Thomas is a former member of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia (Bogotá), the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de la Rupublica Dominicana (Santo Domingo) the South Carolina Philharmonic, East Texas Symphony and the Dallas Lyric Opera Orchestra. Thomas was also on the faculties of the Universidad del Cauca and Universidad del Valle in Colombia, the Conservatorio Nacional in the Dominican Republic, the University of South Carolina (Graduate School Visiting Lecturer of Cello), the South Carolina Governor‘s School for the Arts and Humanities and Presbyterian College. Currently, he is on the faculties of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the Wilmington Academy of Music and is principal cellist of the Wilmington Symphony. During the summers, Thomas is Head of the String Department at Camp Encore-Coda in Sweden, Maine. His principal teachers include Alan Harris, Robert Jesselson, Robert Newkirk, and Adolfo Odnoposoff. Thomas plays a Joseph Grubaugh & Sigrun Seifert cello.
Nancy Brennand ,harpist, has had a varied musical career playing Symphony, Opera, Chamber Music, and numerous Broadway Shows. Nancy has recently traveled and performed as a soloist on the QE2 and Seabourne Sun, visiting over 55 different countries. As a newcomer to the South, she has had opportunities to play with the Long Bay, Florence and Wilmington Symphony Orchestras. In New York City, Nancy played with the New York City Opera and was soloist and principal harpist with the American Symphony Orchestra under Stokowski. She also held principal positions as harpist in the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and Chautauqua Symphonyas well as the New Jersey State Opera. Ms. Brennand has appeared as a chamber music soloist in the Music in the Mountain and Newport Festivals as well as the Pone Ensemble in the Hudson Valley. She may be heard on her CD, ANGELS SERENADE with the Brennand/Gates harp and flute Duo. Nancy resides in Little River, SC where she is also active as an artist. Her watercolor paintings may be seen at the Sunset River Market Place in Calabash, NC ,the Richardson Gallery at Myrtle Beach, SC, and the Horry County Library in N. Myrtle Beach. Nancy has one son who is a neon artist and designer in the Myrtle Beach area. She is a graduate of Northwestern University.
