UNCW Creative Writing Students Announce Art Exhibition

Wilmington, N.C. - Graduate students from the University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Creative Writing will open, The Red Wheelbarrow: An Exhibition of Word and Image, at ERA Furniture and Art Gallery located in downtown Wilmington, on Sunday, Feb. 18. A free reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. The exhibition runs through Feb. 28.

Nine writers in the genres of poetry, fiction and non-fiction have collaborated to bring various perspectives together on the relationship between image and language. Through written and visual mediums, each artist has explored how he or she visually "reads" a photograph as well as the ways in which language affects visual artwork.

The roots of this show began in spring 2006 during a class of Lyric Essay, a style of writing that is one part poem and another part non-fiction essay. The class brought poets, non-fiction and fiction writers together in a unique environment of experimentation and risk-taking. Around the middle of the semester, a conversation about art and writing between MFA students Erin Bond and Janie Miller planted the seeds for the show. By October, nine writers were committed to producing a language art show.

This conceptual art show will include paintings, collages, drawings, photography, and still life sculpture. The artists intend to share artistic efforts and discoveries with the community, and to leave behind an annual legacy for future UNCW graduate students. The ties between language and image are both mysterious and explicit, leaving the opportunity for exploration limitless.
