The University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Art and Art History presents Paintings by Martha Mayer Erlebacher, March 12 - April 5 in the new Cultural Arts Building Art Gallery. In addition to the exhibit, which features 11 works on loan from the Forum Gallery in New York City, the renowned painter will be featured as an artist-in-residence and guest lecturer at the Department of Art and Art History and will also present a public lecture Wednesday, March 14, 7:30 p.m. at the Cameron Art Museum. Erlebacher's residency at UNCW is part of the university's 2006-2007 Year of the Arts celebration.

Born in 1937, Martha Mayer Erlebacher's remarkable career as an artist spans more than 35 years. She has been featured in many of the nation's finest galleries and museums and was chair of the faculty at the New York Academy of Art. Erlebacher is renowned for her stunning realistic still-life and figure paintings, which exhibit the technical proficiency and warm, rich colors of high Renaissance art. Her portraits and nudes, profuse with references to Greek mythology, are abundant in allegorical sources.

"Erlebacher's extensive background in anatomy, historical painting techniques and the practice of realist painting has established her as a contemporary master and leading educator," said Donald Furst, chair of the Department of Art and Art History. "We are honored to have such an artist in our studios and classrooms and to have her work hanging in our Art Gallery."

The Art Gallery, which celebrated its official grand opening in January, is UNCW's first and only secure space dedicated to the exhibition of fine art. "The new gallery has opened up a lot of doors for the department," Furst added. "The ability to bring in artists and works of this caliber is an amazing resource for our students and the entire community."

Paintings by Martha Mayer Erlebacher will be on display in UNCW's Cultural Arts Building Art Gallery from March 12 - April 5. The opening reception will take place from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, March 15. Regular gallery hours are noon - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday or by appointment. For more information, please contact the Department of Art and Art History at 910.962.7958 or 910.962.3440.
