Artist Recital Series: Mike Waddell, clarinet / Bob Russell, guitar

The Department of Music presents UNCW Music faculty in recital 7:30pm Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, Recital Hall

The evening showcases jazz with a twist - original songs featuring ethnic drums and Latin instruments that create a vigorous jazz sound with a distinctly international flavor. Mike Waddell, playing clarinet and saxophone, will be performing songs from his CD Not From Concentrate, while Bob Russell, guitar, will include songs from his first CD, Watch This! Waddell and Russell will be accompanied by Marc Chesanow, standup bass, and Troy Pierce, percussion.

Mike Waddell is a member of the Department of Music faculty and teaches clarinet. His degrees are from the University of Michigan (M.M. '79, clarinet) and East Carolina University (B.M.E. '78). His teachers include David Shifrin, Robert Listokin, Fred Ormand, Buddy DeFranco (jazz), and Donald Sinta (saxophone). Waddell is the recipient of two Jazz Composer Fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council ('94 & '99), as well as two Regional Project Artist Grants from the United Arts Council ('98 & '04). He has released two jazz CDs, "Defining Moments" (2001) and "Not From Concentrate" ('95). JazzTimes reviewer Owen Cordle writes, "'Defining Moments' defines Mike Waddell as a complete artist, a triple threat as clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer." Mr. Cordle chose this as one of his top ten jazz picks of 2001 in the Raleigh, N.C. News and Observer.

Robert Russell is a graduate of UNCW and lecturer in jazz guitar at the Department of Music. He teaches jazz guitar and class guitar, and directs the UNCW Jazz Guitar Ensemble. Russell also plays guitar with his own jazz group, the Bob Russell Trio, as well as with other Wilmington-area jazz musicians. He plays guitar in the Cape Fear Jazz Orchestra and the popular local rock group The 360 Degrees. A firm believer in the benefits of a varied musical diet, he also performs on recorders with the UNCW Renaissance Consort. Russell has two CDs currently in release: "...if you never...", released in 2005, and "Watch This!", released in 2002. Both CDs are available through CD Baby: http://www.cdbaby.com/all/bobrussell. Russell's website, www.bobrussellguitar.com, is a widely-known source of online jazz guitar instruction.
