FEATURED DANCE COMPANIES

Led by artistic director Karola Lüttringhaus, Alban Elved Dance Company/Karola Luttringhaus is an interdisciplinary contemporary dance company originally from Berlin, Germany. Ms. Lüttringhaus creates athletic and theatrical contemporary dance works, which seek to shape meaning from the rich array of emotional experience. Her work is fiercely physical, tracing the changeable electricity of thought and sensation that underlies human interaction and interpersonal relationships. The interdisciplinary nature of their works , which frequently incorporate live music, visual art, digital media, aerial work, and technologies, expands the boundaries of dance performance, creating startling and evocative psychological landscapes. Human Kinetics Movement Arts creates site-specific movement installations. The New York City based company blends dance and the visual arts to transform the environment in such a way that the audience becomes sensitized to new possibilities of perception and meaning. Artistic Director Yana Schnitzler states: "I'm fascinated by fabric. My primary working principle is to explore the different aspects of this material in relation to the human body."

THE 2007 SARUS DANCE FESTIVAL

The Sarus Dance Festival brings together a diverse range of national and international performance artists for a four-day, city-wide collaboration. The festival includes site-specific performances throughout the greater Wilmington area, lectures, demonstrations, amster classes and outreach initiatives.

Performances take place in a number of non-traditional and unusual performance spaces, ranging from the reflection pool at UNCW and the Downtown Riverwalk to the Johnnie Mercer Pier at Writghsville Beach and Cameron Art Museum. Site-specific performances turn elements of "found spaces", including architecture and nature into playgrounds for artistic expression and community meeting. This years' performing companies offer a wide variety of artistic voices combining fierce physiality with meditative and sculptural movement.
