Concerto Competition Student Winners

Join the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra for a delightful evening of American classics for orchestra. John Adams' Short Ride on a Fast Machine is perhaps the most exciting five minutes in the entire orchestral repertoire. Aaron Copland's "Suite" from The Red Pony displays Copland's talent as a great film composer, and Leonard Bernstein's "Three Dance Episodes" from On the Town displays jazzy, Broadway Bernstein at his best. Wilmington composer Barbara Gallagher's inspired Dancing Into the Light will also be performed.

Two promising young American originals, both winners of the annual Richard R. Deas Student Concerto Competition will also share the spotlight. UNCW flute student Catherine Starek is performing Howard Hanson's Serenade for Flute, Harp, and Strings. Oboist Jacob Flynn will perform George Frederick Handel's Concerto in g minor for Oboe.

Pre-concert commentary by conductor Steven Errante begins at 7:00 pm.
