Bummin' It: The Life and Times of Oyster Bummins
This feature-length mockumentary chronicles small-town life in backwoods North Carolina. It tells the story of one Oyster Bummins, a questionable hero living off the goodwill of the town of Burgaw, washing windshields to pay for beer. Life is grand... until outsider Artie Flannigan enters the picture. Artie is smart, sweet, and most tragically of all, the owner of a chain of car washes, the newest of which is to open in Burgaw. The two come to blows in a race for mayor and a battle for the love of a good woman that will change this town forever. Starring Jim Mahorney, Kevin Gilligan, Emily Hubelbank, Chris Bowen and Kitty Fitzgibbon.
This full-length film represents a huge undertaking by recent UNCW Film Studies grads Andy Bader and Justin Cioppa. Justin Cioppa started writing this script while he was a UNCW student. An experiment in micro-budget cinema, the film was shot on weekends over a grueling three months. A high percentage of UNCW students and recent grads participated in the development and filming of Bummin' It. Dozens of local cast and crew also donated their time and skill to bringing the film together. In the fall of 2007, Bummin' It was selected from over of 600 other entries to play at the Thin Line Film Festival in Texas. Bummin' It won the Staff Award.
Andy Bader has worked on One Tree Hill and Bolden, as well as other projects. Justin Cioppa has written and directed numerous plays that have premiered in Wilmington in recent years.
