We are presented with a marriage -- hastily arranged some years ago -- between the quiet, formal Suri (Bollywood megastar Shahrukh Khan) and his hopelessly romantic young wife, Taani (Anushka Sharma). After years of timidity and old-world protocol, both have their doubts about their relationship and themselves as partners. Taani, seeking solace in the lavish dance numbers so common to Hindi cinema, asks her husband's permission to enter a popular dance competition. Seeing the joy this brings her, Suri vows to become a more active and engaging husband. He undergoes a complete makeover, and Suri emerges as Raj, modeled after the hipster heroes of Bollywood culture. Freed from his old-fashioned thinking, Suri moves to woo Taani again through dance -- but she doesn't recognize her husband and falls for this enigmatic new figure! Half-narrative and half-musical, Rab Na Bana Di Jodi is the delightful story of (as it is translated) a 'match made by god'.
