Gareth Johnson, violin, First Place Laureate, 2002 national Sphinx Competition and Wilmington Symphony Orchestra Artist-in-Residence
The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra's 38th concert season bows out spectacularly with Zoltan Kodaly's exhilarating Dances of Galánta, Arvo Pärt's spellbinding Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten, and Johannes Brahms' beloved Violin Concerto in D.
The Wilmington Symphony is also pleased to welcome Violinist Gareth Johnson who is performing with the Wilmington Symphony as part of the Sphinx Professional Development Program. Gareth Johnson, 22, is the First Place Junior Division Laureate of the 2002 national Sphinx Competition for young Black and Latino string players. Despite his young age, Mr. Johnson has already established a remarkably successful career as a featured soloist with the Detroit, Atlanta, Seattle, St. Louis, Cincinnati, New World and Baltimore Symphonies.
In December 2004, Gareth Johnson gave his solo debut at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium to rave reviews in the New York Times. He has also performed recitals nationwide and has received high praise from critics across the country. ... more
