Making a Marriage of Classical and Hip Hop | The Star Ledger

Funk, rock, hip-hop and classical might not seem like natural partners, but violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain (known as DBR) has found a way to blend them into a mesmerizing and distinctive form. The son of Haitian immigrants, Roumain earned his Ph.D. in composition from the University of Michigan. His eclectic, high-energy style-which he calls "dred violin"-has earned praise throughout the music world. He's performed with artists as diverse as the Chicago Sinfonietta, 2 Live Crew, Lady Gaga and Dizzy Gillespie, and has collaborated on new work with minimalist composer Philip Glass, choreographer Bill T. Jones and jazz singer Cassandra Wilson.

For his performance at UNCW, DBR features selected solo and duet works from his recent recording, etudes4violin&electronix, featuring keyboardist Wynne Bennett and Elan Vital, aka DJ Scientific, on turntables and laptop.
