UNCW BIG BAND is composed of students throughout the university and is directed by Jerald Shynett. Big Band performs music ranging from swing to bebop and modern styles. In addition to its concert schedule, the band has produced several recordings and has performed at numerous festivals.
UNCW SAXTET is a jazz ensemble of select students from the Department of Music and is directed by Frank Bongiorno. Consisting of primarily jazz and performance majors, this contemporary ensemble consists of five saxophones, trumpet, and rhythm section. Modeled after the well-known SuperSax groups of the 1970s, Saxtet combines the big band sound of a large jazz ensemble with the subtleties and creative improvisations of a small jazz combo. In July 2009, Saxtet was invited to perform in Bangkok, Thailand, at the 15th Annual World Saxophone Congress.
JERALD SHYNETT has been on the UNCW faculty for 10 years where he teaches trombone, improvisation, jazz theory, jazz arranging, jazz history, and jazz combo. He is an active performer and clinician throughout North Carolina and currently performs with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra and the Jazz Surge, a professional jazz orchestra based out of Florida. Before coming to UNCW in 1998, Mr. Shynett maintained an active career as a freelance trombonist, composer and arranger in Florida. He has performed with Chick Corea, Slide Hampton, Randy Brecker, Conrad Herwig Ira Sullivan, Bob Mintzer, Vincent Herring, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, the O'Jays, Ray Charles, Liza Minelli, and Wayne Newton, among others. His compositions and arrangements have been performed most recently with the John Brown Orchestra, jazz ensembles of the University of North Texas, UNCW, University of South Florida, University of Miami and Northwestern University. His writing credits extend into television and film with Paramount's Domestic Disturbance and Warner Brother's One Tree Hill. Shynett holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of South Florida and a Master of Music from the University of Miami.
FRANK BONGIORNO is Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies Coordinator in the Department of Music at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where he has taught saxophone and jazz studies since 1982. During this time at UNCW, his students have received national and international recognition by such organizations as DownBeat magazine and Jazzfest USA. As an active recitalist, orchestral soloist, jazz artist, and clinician, Bongiorno has performed and presented throughout the United States and abroad. In addition, he performs regularly as a member of the renowned Ryoanji Duo (saxophone and classical guitar), as well as with his jazz group. Other performing credits include performances as a supporting musician for the Four Tops, Carol Channing, Aretha Franklin, Kenny Rogers, Frankie Vallie, Johnny Mathis, as well as for the movie sound track of Chasers.
