UNCW Jazz Combos take the stage, directed by Joe Chambers, Bob Russell, and Frank Bongiorno. Combos are comprised of UNCW jazz students and offer students an opportunity to perform improvisational jazz and explore modern jazz forms in smaller ensemble settings.
JOE CHAMBERS, internationally known jazz percussionist, composer and educator, is the first Thomas S. Kenan Distinguished Professor of Jazz in the Department of Music at UNCW. In addition to being an experienced educator, Chambers is a legendary performer in the field of jazz. He has worked with some of the most historic figures on the jazz scene and is also a recognized composer whose works have been performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. As a sideman and leader, Chambers has recorded more than 500 albums and CDs. He has performed and recorded with Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Wayne Shorter, Andrew Hill, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, and many more. Chambers' credits include Corea's Tones for Joan's Bones. Hubbard's Breaking Point, Hutcherson's Components, Shorter's Schizophrenia and Etcetera, Hill's Compulsion, and Tyner's Tender Moments, as well as Archie Shepp's New Thing at Newport, Charles Mingus' Like a Bird, and many others. Chambers' compositions have been covered by Hutcherson, Hubbard, and M'Boom, and he has scored soundtracks for Spike Lee films, including Mo' Better Blues.
BOB RUSSELL is a graduate of UNCW and lecturer in jazz guitar at the Department of Music. He teaches jazz guitar and class guitar, and directs the UNCW Jazz Guitar Ensemble. Russell also plays guitar with his own jazz group, the Bob Russell Trio, as well as with other Wilmington area jazz musicians. He plays guitar in the Cape Fear Jazz Orchestra and the popular local rock group the 360 Degrees. A firm believer in the benefits of a varied musical diet, he also performs on recorder with the UNCW Early Music Consort. Russell has two CDs currently in release: …if you never… and Watch This!. FRANK BONGIORNO is Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies Coordinator in the Department of Music at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where he has taught saxophone and jazz studies since 1982. During this time at UNCW, his students have received national and international recognition by such organizations as DownBeat magazine and Jazzfest USA. As an active recitalist, orchestral soloist, jazz artist, and clinician, Bongiorno has performed and presented throughout the United States and abroad. In addition, he performs regularly as a member of the renowned Ryoanji Duo (saxophone and classical guitar), as well as with his jazz group. Other performing credits include performances as a supporting musician for the Four Tops, Carol Channing, Aretha Franklin, Kenny Rogers, Frankie Vallie, Johnny Mathis, as well as for the movie sound track of Chasers.
