PROGRAM DETAILS
Choreographed by Karola Luttringhaus and featuring guest pianist Norman Bemelmans, "Inertia" explores society's resistance to change and the "equal or greater force" it takes to induce that change once it is in motion. Inspired by Luttringhaus' reflections on the persecution of Jews throughout (and prior to) World War II, the piece uses Jewish melodies in combination with the fierce, athletic dance unique to alban elved. The greater scope of Inertia, however expresses the pain we experience when we reflect on the existence of past and present racism and separatism, from the Jewish experience to the experience of American Indians, African Americans, victims of Apartheid and the discrimination and abuse of women throughout the world.
ARTIST PROFILE
Led by artistic director Karola Lüttringhaus, alban elved dance company/Karola Lüttringhaus is an interdisciplinary contemporary dance company originally from Berlin, Germany.
Ms. Lüttringhaus creates athletic and theatrical contemporary dance works, which seek to shape meaning from the rich array of emotional experience. Her work is fiercely physical, tracing the changeable electricity of thought and sensation that underlies human interaction and interpersonal relationships. The interdisciplinary nature of their works , which frequently incorporate live music, visual art, digital media, aerial work, and technologies, expands the boundaries of dance performance, creating startling and evocative psychological landscapes.
