Featured in the Spike Lee's documentary When the Levees Broke, New Orleans' own Hot 8 Brass Band has embodied New Orleans street music for over a decade, playing the traditional Second Line parades hosted each Sunday afternoon by Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs. All born and raised in New Orleans, the band members infuse their performances with the distinctive heritage of funk and energy that makes this brand of music so loved around the world.
ABOVE & BEYOND: Hot 8 Brass Band hosts a lecture/demonstration on Wednesday, March 18 at 3:30 pm in the Beckwith Recital Hall in the UNCW Cultural Arts Building. The lec/dem combines live performance with personal stories of band members to connect participants to the people, music, and traditions that have emerged from the streets of New Orleans. The program is facilitated by UNCW music professor, Jerald Shynett, and it is free and open to the public.
Tickets: $6 UNCW students, $8 non-UNCW students, $16 UNCW employees and senior citizens, $20 public. Call Kenan Box Office 910.962.3500. Campus members may visit Sharyk's Box Office in the Fisher Student Center
