February One: The Story of the Greensboro Four (NR)
In one remarkable day, four college freshmen changed the course of American history. On February 1, 1960, Ezell Blair, Jr. (now Jibreel Khazan), David Richmond, Franklin McCain and Joseph McNeil-later dubbed the Greensboro Four-began a sit-in at a Woolworth's lunch counter in a small city in North Carolina. The act of simply sitting down to order food in a restaurant that refused service to anyone but whites is now widely regarded as one of the pivotal moments in the American Civil Rights Movement.

Offering an unusually intimate portrait of four men whose moral courage at ages 17 and 18 not only changed public accommodation laws in North Carolina but also served as a blueprint for non-violent protests throughout the 1960s.

FEBRUARY ONE: The Story of the Greensboro Four reveals how these idealistic college students became friends and inspired one another to stage the sit-in, and how the burden of history has impacted their lives ever since.

DVD. 61 min. 2003.

Sponsored by the Black Student Union, Campus Activities & Involvement Center, and the Center for Leadership Education & Service.

The Fight for Water (NR)
The Fight for Water is a documentary film about an oil spill that happened on Feb. 28th, 2009 in the Ecuadorian Amazon Rain forest. An estimated 14,000 barrels of crude oil seeped into the Napo and Coca Rivers, both of which are tributaries of the Amazon River. Through the eyes of the local residents, both indigenous and non-indigenous, the film explores not only the specific case of the Santa Rosa spill, but also the legacy of contamination of water from the exploitation of petroleum in the northern Amazon region of Ecuador and the struggle for survival by the inhabitants of the region within the framework of the new environmental protection that are part of the Constitutional reform of 2008. The film also examines another controversial topic in the border area with Colombia; the impact of the 150,000 refugees and displaced people from the Colombian conflict, and the relationship between contamination of water in the border areas and the human impact of the coca eradication programs that were implemented as part of Plan Colombia, a joint initiative between the United States government and their Colombian counterpart.

Delwende: Get Up and Walk!
This mother-daughter tale focuses on the injustice of some traditional African practices and women's struggle for equality. A small village in Burkino Faso is devastated by the sudden death of many of its children. Fearing the worst, Diarrha sends his daughter Pougbila to get married in another village despite the objections of his wife Napoko. She learns that their daughter has been raped, possibly by her own husband and therefore she accepts the arranged marriage despite her own reservations. Following a village tradition, the elders conduct a witch-hunt to find the person responsible for all the deaths. The blame falls on Napoko and she is chased out of the village. Upon learning of her mother's fate, Pougbila embarks on a journey to find her. Her travel leads her to the capital, Ouagadougou, where she finds her mother in a shelter for women accused of witchcraft. Intent on exposing the truth, she brings Napoko home and forces the elders to confront the truth: Diarrha took advantage of a local village tradition in order to direct the blame towards his wife. Based on a true story, Delwende examines some traditional customs in Africa and the role women play in exposing the injustices perpetrated against them. 4 Little Girls (NR)
Director Spike Lee made his first feature-length documentary with this powerful story of the bombing of an African-American church in Birmingham, AL, in 1963, which took the lives of four girls, ages 11 through 14. The shocking incident received national press attention and became a rallying point in the ongoing struggle for civil rights, but while Lee's film examines the crime, the perpetrators, and the long struggle to bring them to justice, it also offers a close look at the four girls themselves as their friends and families recall, in moving detail, who they were and how they lived. A variety of civil rights activists, politicians, journalists, and lawyers are interviewed onscreen, including Walter Cronkite and a brief but disturbing meeting with former Alabama governor George Wallace.

A Grain of Sand (NR) & Becoming (NR)
ACE Films hosts two films by UNCW graduate and celebrated filmmaker Joseph Richard Johnson Camí. Both films have appeared in several recent international film festivals. A Q&A with the director follows the screenings.

A Grain of Sand (2008). Brendon Grimshaw, a British national, was editor to some of the most important newspapers in Africa. But in 1972, he gave it all up to go and live on Moyenne Island, which he purchased for ten thousand pounds. In the thirty-six-years that he's lived on the island, Brendon and his friend, Rene Lafortune, planted sixteen-thousand trees, built 4,8 kilometers of nature paths, and brought and bred 109 giant land tortoises, creating an island of incredible beauty now worth 50 million dollars. Come with us on this journey and discover why an 82-year-old man fears his island will one day be destroyed by the ever-expanding reach of our insatiable desires, and how a film wants to save a beautiful island from commercial exploitation. Spain. Directed by Joseph Richard Johnson Camí. DVD. 83 min.

Becoming (2009). Becoming tells the story of Idolamantis, an ancient woman that moves like a praying mantis as she blends gracefully through changing landscapes. Despite her elegance, though, Idolamantis is not called upon lightly, for she is as deadly as she appears innocent. But the wise fireflies that watch over the forest have sensed a danger. Man's uniformity has spread through infinite fields that are swallowing up the last remnants of those old forests we once inhabited. Idolamantis crosses the last portal that separates our worlds and leaps through a cornfield to lure Man into one final battle. Canada. Directed by Joseph Richard Johnson Camí & Ayelen Liberona. Jimmie Killingsworth: As If the Beasts Spoke. The Animal, Animist, Animated Walt Whitman (Buckner Lecture)

Professor Killingsworth will talk on how animals are depicted in Walt Whitman's poetry, beginning with Henry David Thoreau's famous comment on reading Whitman's Leaves of Grass that it is as if the beasts spoke. Understanding Whitman's animals, Killingsworth suggests, is key to understanding Whitman's ideas of spirituality, the role of nature, and what it means to be human in a world that witnesses an assault on nature- issues that are particularly relevant in today's world. Killingsworth's expertise encompasses a wide range of fields, from 19th century literature to rhetoric to modern ecology. This event is sponsored by the Buckner Lecture Series and the UNCW Department of English and is free and open to the public.

Professor Killingsworth is the author or co-author of ten books and over fifty scholarly articles and chapters. Killingsworth's teaching and research are focused on American literature, rhetoric, and cultural studies. In recent years he has concentrated particularly on eco-criticism and environmental rhetoric. His books include Ecospeak: Rhetoric and Environmental Politics in America (with Jacqueline Palmer, 1992), Walt Whitman and the Earth: A Study in Ecopoetics (2004), Appeals in Modern Rhetoric: An Ordinary Language Approach (2005), The Cambridge Introduction to Walt Whitman (2007), and Reflections of the Brazos Valley (with photographs by Gentry Steele, 2007). He is currently working on a general study of nature writing in modern times.

All Buckner Lectures are free and open to the public. For further information, please contact the UNCW Department of English at (910) 962-3320.

Accommodations for disabilities may be made by calling (910) 962-3320 three days prior to the event.
