The University of North Carolina Wilmington's Opera Outreach Project, UNC-WOOP!, presents the opera Hansel and Gretel at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 20 at UNCW's Kenan Auditorium.

UNCW's production of Hansel and Gretel is a condensed version that runs approximately 50 minutes, is sung in English, and is appropriate for all ages, especially young children. It is most admired for its folk music-inspired themes, one of the most famous being the Abendsegen, or "Evening Prayer," from Act 2.

Hansel and Gretel was written by 19th century composer Engelbert Humperdinck, who described it as a Marchenoper, or fairy tale opera. The libretto was written by Humperdinck's sister, Adelheid Wette, based on the Grimms Brothers' story about the brother and sister who find themselves lost in the forest, where the Witch casts a spell on them and begins to "fatten them up" for dinner. But Hansel and Gretel are saved by their own ingenuity and by working together.

Tickets to Hansel and Gretel are available through the Kenan Auditorium box office, 910.962.3500. Adults $10; children ages 5-17 $5; children under 5 free.

Now in its sixth year, UNCW's Opera Outreach Project promotes opera through live performances, community engagement and educational outreach. The ensemble is directed by Nancy King, coordinator of vocal performance at UNCW, and is comprised of university students, alumni and special guest artists.
