WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Boseman-TenHuisen Scholarship, the first merit scholarship to benefit students of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s PRIDE organization, became fully endowed as of Dec. 12. Devon Crosbie, a UNCW senior from Fayetteville, is the first recipient of the scholarship and will receive $500. Crosbie has served as the president of PRIDE for two years.

The scholarship was created to assist UNCW students who because of their sexual orientation had lost family funding or support to attend the university. It is modeled after the Frank-Tremblay Scholarship at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts. The UNCW scholarship is named in honor of Ann Boseman and Matthew TenHuisen, an exemplary parent and an exemplary professor who support both UNCW and the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) communities. The organizers suggest that Boseman and TenHuisen demonstrate those qualities and traits that the scholarship attempts to recognize.

“This is truly a Christmas gift I will never forget” said UNCW honors program assistant and Outwilmington founder, L.S. “Bo” Dean. “The efforts on behalf of this whole community to see this completed is nothing short of the magnificence I believe happens everyday when we believe.” According to Dean, the scholarship endowment process began in August 2002 and has received speedy funding, under the requisite two-year limit.

Crosbie is also the recipient of this year’s distinguished Ralph Parker Award from the UNCW Office of Campus Diversity. In 2002, he was a recipient of the Office of Student Affairs Leadership Recognition and a scholarship winner to the Human Rights Campaign dinner in Greensboro. Crosbie has organized several major events raising awareness on campus, including the National Day of Silence.

“Devon is very deserving of this award” said Dr. TenHuisen “He is a great example of a UNCW student.”
