Wilmington, N.C. – The Umbilical Brothers comedy duo brings their show, THWAK, to UNCW's Kenan Auditorium at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26. This is the fourth performance of UNCW’s eight-part Arts in Action Performance Series.
Dave Collins (the one with curly hair) and Shane Dundas (the one without...hair) met in Sydney, Australia where they studied “modern performance” such as “Lack of Confidence” and “Abject Poverty.” These “psychic twins, joined in an irresistible conspiracy to commit comedy” (The New York Times), mix tightly choreographed mayhem with live audio-acrobatics to create THWAK’s surreal world of full-tilt adventures where Collins’ rubber body reacts to Dundas’ precise sound effects. Classic cartoons, lounge singers, action heroes, and even a muppet or two—Collins fights them off with the finesse of Jackie Chan and the malleability of Bugs Bunny. THWAK is “twisted, marvelously peculiar, and absolutely hilarious” (Time Out New York).
The Umbilical Brothers show garnered a Drama Desk nomination in 1999 for Unique Theatrical Experience. In THWAK, Collins is the petulant younger brother who always wants his older brother’s toys, while Dundas plays the smirking, slightly sadistic older sibling who takes pleasure in watching the little one squirm. Indulging their irreverent imaginations, the Umbilical Brothers unravel THWAK’s madcap universe and toss around imaginary exploding dogs, humiliate invisible hand puppets, and pursue each other across the stage like Tom and Jerry on the set of Terminator 3. It all culminates in a unique theatrical experience that “will have you howling with delight” (Daily News).
