Wilmington, NC – “Coastal Viewpoints,” a joint exhibit showcasing paintings by artists Susan Dade and Priscilla Long Whitlock, begins Tuesday, January 20 and runs through Monday, March 22 at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in the Living Room in the University Union. The opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 23. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. The exhibit is sponsored by the Campus Activities and Involvement Center.
Susan Dade and Priscilla Long Whitlock create vibrant coastal landscapes and figurative paintings of flourishing fishing communities, relaxing shoreline environments and still marshes, all drawing upon the seaside atmosphere unique to coastal Carolina. Whitlock says of her work outdoors, “when an artist learns to speak the vocabulary of the locale, he/she is no longer bound to the restraints of observation and can begin a free expression, in paint.” Dade states that the coastal Carolina scenery is alive with color, light and contrast, qualities that she likes to express in her paintings.
Priscilla Long Whitlock graduated from East Carolina University and is a faculty member at Beverley Street Studio School, an observational based art school in Staunton, Va. Whitlock was the recipient of a grant to live and work in the studio of French painter Yvonne Jean-Haffen in Brittany, France. Her work is in private and public collections and institutions in the United States, Italy and France. She resides in Charlottesville, Va., and spends as much time as possible in her Harbor Island studio.
Susan Dade graduated from the Parson School of Design and spent many years as a fashion illustrator for Women’s Wear Daily and Glamour Magazine. This influence is seen in the bold and splashy line and color of her landscapes and figurative paintings. Her works are in many private and corporate collections throughout the country. Ms. Dade currently lives in Southport.
