UNCW Professor Recipient of Honor Award

WILMINGTON, N.C. – John P. Bennett, professor in the Department of Health and Applied Human Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington will receive the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance 2004 Honor Award. It will be presented on April 1 at the AAHPERD 2004 National Convention in New Orleans, La.
According to the alliance, the AAHPERD Honor Award recognizes meritorious contributions on the part of members of the Alliance in the two membership categories "college and university" and "non-college and university." Recipients are persons of personal integrity who exemplify the spirit of devoted service to the professions and who have, by their leadership and industry, made an outstanding and noteworthy contribution to the advancement of health, physical education, recreation, or dance.
According to Bennett, only a handful of people have ever received this award in North Carolina and no one at UNCW. Bennett is ecstatic about the award and views it as national recognition by his peers for his 35 year career in health, physical education and dance at both the public school and university levels.
“I am very humbled to be chosen for this honor. I am best known throughout the country for my contributions to elementary and secondary health and physical education programs and for my lifelong contributions to dance education,” Bennett said. He plans to travel to New Orleans to receive the award.
Bennett is the recipient of numerous other awards, including the UNCW 2003 J. Marshall Crews Distinguished Faculty Award and the North Carolina 2002 College/University Dance Educator of the Year Award from the Dance Association of the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
