Poet Nikki Giovanni Comes to UNCW in Honor of Women’s History Month

Wilmington, N.C. - The University of North Carolina at Wilmington Office of Campus Diversity presents “Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea…and More” at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 28 in Kenan Auditorium. Nikki Giovanni, author of over two dozen books, including “Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea,” will give a lecture to celebrate Women’s History Month.

Giovanni is a well-known poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator. The lecture will focus on the individual and the power one has to make a difference. As the recipient of nineteen honorary doctorates, “Woman of the Year” awards, Governors’ Awards from Tennessee and Virginia and the 1998 and 2000 NAACP Image Award, Giovanni is seen as a strong voice in the black community and remains determined to fight for civil rights and equality. Giovanni is currently a distinguished university professor at Virginia Tech, where she has been teaching writing and literature since 1987.
