Zakaria Is Leadership Lecture Series Speaker March 29

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Dr. Fareed Zakaria, as part of the Leadership Lecture Series, will speak about “Globalization: The Next Phase” at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington at 7 p.m. Monday, March 29 in Kenan Auditorium.

Esquire named Zakaria “one of the twenty-one most important people of the 21st Century.” In addition to editing Newsweek International, which has a global readership of 3.5 million, he oversees Newsweek’s eight editions throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and Australia. He also writes a column that appears in Newsweek, Newsweek International and The Washington Post.

After September 11, 2001, and then just before war was declared in Iraq, Zakaria wrote two cover stories for Newsweek: “Why They Hate Us,” and “Why America Scares the World.” He is the author of The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad (April 2003), a book on global political trends, and From Wealth to Power, which is an examination of America’s role on the world stage.

Zakaria also has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The New Yorker. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Overseas Press Club Award, the National Press Club’s Edwin Hood Award, the Deadline Club Award for Best Columnist and a lifetime achievement award from the South Asian Journalists Association.

He offers regular political analysis on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos. He also appears as an analyst on other ABC News programs and has appeared on such programs as Charlie Rose, Firing Line, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, The McLaughlin Group, BBC World News and Meet the Press.
