Wilmington, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Association for Campus Entertainment presents Poetry Flow at 8 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 27 in UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium. This event will feature poets from HBO’s Def Poetry Jam including Lemon, Derrick “Abyss” Graham, Joel Chmara, Thea Monyee and Vanessa Hidary. The event will begin with local winning poets from the Watson School of Education Poetry Slam.

Lemon has been spreading his spoken word/poetry since 1996. He has been featured in many shows and plays including the first season of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and the stage adaptation “Def Poetry Jam on Broadway.” Abyss served eight years with the U.S. Navy and is known for his ability to “get deep” with his lyrics. He has appeared in several venues along the East Coast, including the Atlanta Jazz Festival, HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and the Comedy Showcase. Chmara is a professor of speech communication at Illinois State University, founder and host of The Candy Slam, a poetry slam and open mic in Illinois and Slam Master and founder of the Normal Slam team. Monyee is a fresh face on the poetry scene, but has not made her entrance quietly. Already she has been included in such venues as HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, BET’s The Way We Do It, Isaac Hayes’ Downtown Comedy in Chicago and she is also a regular at LA’s Poetry Lounge. Monyee was also a member of the 2002 Los Angeles Slam Team. Hidary was among some of the first poets taped for HBO’s Def Poetry Jam series and performed a solo show “Culture Bandit” in June of 2002. She also performed on the September 11th tribute on NBC’s “Concert for America”.

Tickets will be available Monday, March 1 from the Kenan Auditorium box office. Admission is free for UNCW students, faculty and staff and $5 for the public. Tickets can be obtained from the University Union information desk at 910/962-3841 or at the Kenan Auditorium box office at 910/962-3500 or 800/732-3643.
