Dr. Michael C. Blackwell, Chair of the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, today announced that Dr. Robert “Robin” Dorff will become the Executive Director of the Institute on July l, 2004.

Blackwell, who is also the President of the Baptist Children’s Homes, said “The Board of Directors is proud to elect Dr. Dorff the new Executive Director of the Institute of Political Leadership. Robin succeeds Dr. Walt De Vries, who founded and led the IOPL for seventeen years. The Board looks forward to the continuation and expansion of the Institute’s leadership program in the years ahead.”

De Vries remarked “I am so pleased that Robin will be the next Executive Director. He is one of the few political scientists in America with strong academic credentials and real, practical experience.”

Upon being named for the post Dorff comments, “It is a wonderful program that Walt and others have built and we will do everything we can to preserve, enhance and expand the Institute.”

Chairman Blackwell said, “The IOPL Board plans to move the offices of the Institute to Raleigh in order for it to be closer to the state capital with more access to the state legislature, the governor and major policy groups. For the past five years, we have appreciated the support and our affiliation with UNCW and will continue to work with them on special political and governmental programs.”

The N.C. Institute of Political Leadership is a multi-partisan, non-profit, research and educational institution formed to improve the overall quality of political and governmental leadership at the state and local levels.
