2004 Razor Walker Awards

Wilmington, NC – Boney Architects and six individuals are the recipients of the 12th Annual Razor Walker Awards. The ceremony will be held at UNCW’s Warwick Center Ballroom at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 26. The Razor Walker Awards recognize the efforts and commitment of a select group of people and one corporation who have improved the lives of and educational opportunities for children in North Carolina.

The Razor Walker Award was established in 1993 by the UNCW Watson School of Education to recognize outstanding contributions in the areas of: art/literature, business, educational administration, law, medicine, philanthropy, public service/policy, and teaching/research. It is considered one of North Carolina’s most prestigious and unique service awards.

The 2004 recipients are:

Boney Architects - Established in the early 1900s this architectural firm has focused on the planning and design of educational facilities. Boney designed schools can be found throughout North Carolina and include the three original buildings at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Mary Easley – As First Lady of North Carolina, she has established teacher recruitment and retention, infant immunization, especially among North Carolinians with English as their second language and reduction of underage drinking to be among her foremost goals.

James Leutze - Chancellor of UNCW from 1990 through 2003, he strengthened the institution’s undergraduate teaching and overall academic excellence causing it to emerge as one of the top 10 public regional undergraduate universities in the South.

Mary Sidberry Mosley – She formed the Bottom Neighborhood Association Inc., a non-profit agency, in response to the deteriorating conditions of the Wilmington neighborhood in which she grew up. In 2000, she expanded the group’s focus and the Family and Neighborhoods Institute of North Carolina was founded.

Robert Phay – He is the founder of World View: An International Program for Educators at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The program assists schools and colleges in applying a greater understanding of the complexities of an increasingly interconnected world.

Frank Reynolds - A native of Wilmington, he was recognized throughout his career as a medical leader and trusted pediatrician. He is an advocate for child health care among underprivileged children.

William Self – He was a teacher and administrator with the Winston Salem school system and superintendent of the Charlotte/Mecklenburg school system when the school desegregated its student population. Self is recognized by educators throughout the state as an influential leader with virtue, honesty, integrity and dedication.
