Wilmington, N.C. – Hoang-Anh Tran, a University of North Carolina at Wilmington graduate student, received a Fulbright scholarship to study in Vietnam. She is the ninth UNCW student awarded this prestigious grant. Tran is receiving her Master of Fine Arts in creative writing in May.
Tran is writing a collection of poetry tentatively titled Broken Echelon. “The poems will have an emphasis on identity, language, family, religion and female voices. It’s hard to categorize poems because it reduces and limits their scope. I want to communicate my ideas and experiences as well as those of other women,” she said.
“The Fulbright is a great opportunity because I will have the chance to write without restrictions and that is very liberating for a writer. I am pleased UNCW participates in this program, because not many undergraduates or graduates would think about applying. I would strongly encourage them to consider it,” Tran said.
Tran was born in Saigon, Vietnam, and immigrated to the United States in 1986. She will use the scholarship to revisit her birthplace, examine how it has changed and how she has changed. She will leave in late August 2004 and return in May 2005. When she returns to the United States, she will apply to a Ph.D. program in Asian-American studies, women’s studies or religion. Tran has an undergraduate degree in English from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She decided to study at UNCW because of its supportive writing community.
Philip Furia, chair of the UNCW Department of Creative Writing, said, “We’re proud of her. I read her thesis and she is a wonderful poet. She is a wonderful leader among graduate students.”
The Fulbright, America’s flagship educational exchange program, is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is designed to increase mutual understanding between Americans and other countries. This program awards approximately 1,000 grants annually and operates in over 140 countries. For more information visit www.exchanges.state.gov/education/fulbright/.
The competition for the academic year 2005-06 will begin Saturday, May 1. UNCW juniors, seniors and graduate students interested in applying can contact Raymond Burt, assistant vice chancellor of academic affairs, at 910/962-4095 for more information.
