WILMINGTON, NC – Ground was broken Thursday, April 29, for the latest construction project on the UNCW campus – the Technology Support Center.

The 16,424-square-foot, two-story addition to Hoggard Hall will offer state-of-the-art equipment and technology accessibility in a casual, comfortable setting.

On the first floor, it will house the Technology Assistance Center which will have work areas for students, collaboration spaces, individual rooms for one-on-one instruction, demo areas to showcase new technologies and a technology library. A faculty center will give faculty access to production, multi-media and digital editing equipment in a more private and relaxed environment.

The Computer Support Center, located on the second floor of the addition, will feature a hi-tech computer room with all of the centralized servers for the campus. This large room will be temperature-controlled and have state-of-the-art equipment. Offices for the computer services staff will be located in this area.

Along with the addition, renovations will be made to the existing structure of Hoggard Hall, one of the university’s three original buildings, which opened in 1961. This includes updating the infrastructure to meet computing and administrative needs.

Hoggard Hall currently houses the School of Nursing and a large portion of the Information Technology Systems Division. The School of Nursing will be relocated to a temporary site before moving permanently to Friday Hall. Replacing it will be a number of administrative offices including internal audit, payroll, accounts payable, university planning and university relations.

The total cost of the construction and renovation project is $6 million. Funding is coming from the Higher Education Facilities Bond Issue overwhelmingly supported by N.C. voters in 2000. The entire project should be completed by summer 2005.

Participating in the ceremony were Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo; Jeff Etheridge, chair of the UNCW Board of Trustees; Robert Tyndall, vice chancellor, Information Technology Systems Division; Ron Core, vice chancellor, business affairs; Gen Miller, student technology vice president; Halbert Jones, Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce Architects and John Muter, Barnhill Contracting.
