UNCW Chancellor Creates Task Forces to Review Campus Violence and Education Programs

Wilmington, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Wilmington Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo today announced the names of individuals for two task forces to review the safety, security, and education programs at UNCW after the recent tragic deaths.
The task force on campus violence prevention is being formed to review the safety and security of the campus community, with particular emphasis on student interactions with each other. It will consist of people from outside the university as well as faculty, staff, and students at UNCW.
“I am asking this task force to conduct a thorough review of the processes and procedures we currently have in place for safety and security and make specific recommendations to me on ways we can improve,” said DePaolo. “The safety of our university family is paramount, and I expect this review to examine all facets of campus life.”
The task force will review issues relating to:
• Stalking, sexual harassment, and interpersonal relationships
• Codes of conduct and disciplinary measures
• Intervention mechanisms for dealing with potentially dangerous students, faculty, and staff
• Alcohol and substance abuse issues
• Procedures for dealing with distressed students, faculty, and staff
• Crisis management
• Admissions procedures, and
• Safety of our physical campus environment

Throughout the work of the task force, a Web site will be maintained to post information and other resources for the campus community. The task force will begin work in early July and conclude with a report containing recommendations to the chancellor by Dec. 17, 2004.
A separate task force on education and training initiatives for campus violence prevention is being formed to conduct a review of all current programs and training seminars on topics of dating and domestic violence, stalking, harassment and sexual assault. This committee will be asked to examine all current programs and recommend what additional offerings should be added to supplement our programs.
“Although I appreciate the strong education and training programs we currently have, I believe we can do more. The recent deaths of our students necessitate a complete review of all our education and training programs that we are providing to our campus community,” said DePaolo. “We must provide the necessary resources to our campus community to help educate everyone on the various issues relating to campus violence.”

The task force will meet in July to assess current educational programs for students. In August, it will give recommendations to the chancellor for additional education programs to be implemented during the fall semester. A final report with recommendations on education and training initiatives for students, faculty, and staff will be provided to the chancellor by Nov. 1, 2004.
