Wilmington, N.C. – “Vicarious Spaces” an exhibit showcasing paintings by local artist MJ Cunningham begins August 9 and runs through October 4 at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Warwick Center Gallery. The opening reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, August 13. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. The exhibit is sponsored by UNCW Presents cultural arts programs.
MJ Cunningham’s paintings reflect diversification, revelation and celebration. Inspired by the tenets of Zen–the beauty of the old, rustic, used and simple things of nature, Cunningham says her art can be best described as Wabi Sabi: A beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. A beauty of things modest and humble and a beauty of things unconventional.
Cunningham says of her work, “each creation requires and deserves its own medium, its own style of interpretation. My goal is to find and reveal a hidden meaning in the process. When it is found and the piece is complete, I celebrate because I have taken another step forward in the artistic process. I would like my non-objective pieces to be a tea ceremony—a place to meditate, a starting point for the mind.”
Cunningham received a master’s in fine arts from Hollins University in Virginia. She has instructed at the Art Institute of Charlotte and Virginia Tech. She also served as gallery coordinator for the McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, N.C. and Art Department for UNC Charlotte. Her work has been commissioned for public collections for the Mint Museum of Art, Museo de Collage in Mexico and Art Colle in Sergines, France. She resides in Wilmington, N.C. and currently owns MJ’s Art and Framing.
