Wilmington, N.C.—The University of North Carolina at Wilmington announces its Leadership Lecture Series 2004-05 lineup. Speakers represent a range of disciplines and will speak on topics currently at the forefront of American debate, such as same-sex marriage, religious fundamentalism, media bias and free speech. All lectures are Mondays at 7 p.m. in Kenan Auditorium and are followed by a question and answer period and book signing.

Andrew Sullivan, September 27

“Same Sex Marriage: The Arguments Against and For”

Sullivan is author of several critically-acclaimed books on one of the country’s most contentious social issues: gay rights. He is the former editor-in-chief of The New Republic. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and Esquire. Currently, he is editor of andrewsullivan.com and an essayist for TIME Magazine.

Karen Armstrong, October 25

“Battle for God: Fundamentalism in Judaism, Christianity and Islam”

Armstrong, once dubbed the “runaway nun,” calls attention to the profound similarities between Christianity, Judaism and Islam. She is author of the international best-seller The History of God. Other books include Jerusalem, The Gospel According to Woman, Holy War, Muhammad and The Battle for God. She also played a key role in Bill Moyer’s PBS series on religion.

Jonah Goldberg and Peter Beinart, January 24

“Media Bias: A Look from the Left and the Right”

Editors from two of America’s most conservative and liberal publications, National Review and The New Republic, debate media bias. Jonah Goldberg, once dubbed the Gen X answer to P.J. O’Rourke, and Peter Beinart, one of the more precocious editors of a national magazine, will give “A Look From the Left and the Right” on current media coverage of various key events. Goldberg is the editor of the National Review. Beinart is the editor of The New Republic.

Stanley Fish, March 14

“There’s No Such Thing as Free Speech: And it’s a Good Thing, Too”

Fish will discuss what he believes a university properly stands for and what is, at most, tangential to its core activities. He has argued repeatedly that a university is primarily a place for teaching and research and that the “unfettered expression of ideas” is a prime political value, not an academic one.

Tickets are free for UNCW students, faculty and staff, and $6 for the general public. To reserve tickets, call the Kenan Auditorium Box Office at 910/962-3500, or 800/732-3643 outside of the Wilmington area. Ticket office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
