WILMINGTON, NC – “Plein Air Plus,” an exhibit showcasing paintings by Wilmington artists Sally Bullers, Christine Bosna Farley and Rachel Kastner begins Aug. 16 and runs through Oct. 11 in UNCW’s University Union gallery. The opening reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. The exhibit is sponsored by the UNCW Presents cultural arts program.

Painting en plein air (the open air) is unlike any other painting technique. With its roots in 19th century Europe, it challenges artists to concentrate every sensory nerve on the information in front of them. The goal for plein air painting is to capture the light and colors peculiar to the place.

“Plein air painting is a quick, spontaneous way to paint, capturing the light of the moment,” said Bullers.

“Plein Air Plus” features oil paintings, mixed media and watercolor of landscapes, seascapes and still life. One of the goals of the show Kastner said “is to not try to convey messages in the work, but rather a sense of feeling and visual satisfaction.”

Bullers began her art career painting in oils. She received second place in the 2003 Associated Artists of Southport July National Show. Her works can be seen at the Wilmington Gallery at Chandler’s Wharf and also appear in private collections in the area and across the country including UNCW’s Randall Library. Originally from southeastern Virginia, Kastner paints primarily in mixed media and oils. She has exhibited in the Wilmington Art Association Spring Show for the past six years and is participated in the 2004 Associated Artists of Southport July National Show. Farley is an exhibiting member of Wilmington Gallery and is past president of Wilmington Art Association. She has participated in numerous juried shows, including the Louis Wells Cameron Digital Art Show. All three are members of the Wilmington Art Association.
