WILMINGTON, N.C. – When classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 18, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington will be opening its doors to the largest number of students in its 57-year history.

Although final figures won’t be available for several weeks, undergraduate and graduate enrollment is estimated to be 11,500 students.

Interest in UNCW continues to be high. Freshman applications were up by 723, bringing the total number to 9,615. Approximately 1,900 are expected to be enrolled. The average SAT score of those accepted freshmen who had made a tuition deposit was up 23 points to 1127.

New for fall 2004 is a bachelor’s degree in clinical research offered through the School of Nursing. The program will prepare health science professionals to participate in the science and business of developing health care products and protocols from discovery to market and human utilization. It is the result of a partnership with PPD. The School of Nursing is also offering a new nurse educator option to its Master of Science program. It is designed to produce a professional with the values, knowledge and skills to educate nurses for current and future health care delivery systems. It is a collaboration between the School of Nursing, the Watson School of Education and the Department of Math and Statistics.

The university community will welcome freshmen on Saturday, Aug. 14, during Move-In. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., some 1,200 volunteers, including faculty, staff and alumni, will help students unpack their cars and carry their numerous belongings to their rooms in campus residence halls.
