WILMINGTON, N.C. – Robert Warren received the 2004 UNCW Staff Award of Excellence at the university’s 29th annual Service Awards Program.

The Staff Award of Excellence recognizes an employee whose service to the university exemplifies outstanding state service, innovation, public service, human relations or safety/heroism.

This year’s other nominees were Thomas Cone, student affairs; Danny Edens, environmental health and safety; Kathryn Erickson, Cameron School of Business; Pat Geiser, Cameron School of Business; Shannon Hooker, campus activities; Cynthia Hucks, business affairs; Jeffrey Lesley, student affairs; Tami Mansur, information technology systems; Sgt. Robert Moulton, campus police; and Beth Roberts, Randall Library. Postal services manager Mike Lloyd, a past Staff Award of Excellence Award winner, received special recognition and a standing ovation from his peers, for his efforts to thwart an abduction at a local grocery store.

Warren, superintendent of landscape services, was also recognized for 20 years of service to the university. He is a UNCW alumnus and member of the UNCW Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Nominated for the award by co-worker Karen Tobiassen, Warren was recognized for his “dedication, creativity and eye for detail (that) have elevated the reputation of the campus grounds,” which rank among the best in the UNC system. In addition, she said he “can always be counted on to cheerfully assist faculty and staff with anything comfort, accessibility or curriculum related on all campus properties. He is always quietly at work behind the scenes assisting with gardening advice or helping promote friendship and cooperation with a big smile and a great sense of humor.”

As this year’s recipient, Warren received $1,500 presented by the UNCW Board of Trustees, a reserved parking space for one year, three days of vacation leave, a presentation clock and a framed certificate. In addition, his name will be engraved on a plaque which is on display in the university’s administrative building, Alderman Hall. The recipient of the UNCW Staff Award of Excellence is nominated for the Governor’s Award of Excellence.
