Wilmington, N.C.—The University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Leadership Lecture series kicks off with Andrew Sullivan, award-winning former editor-in-chief of The New Republic. He outlines the arguments for and against gay marriage at his lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27 in Kenan Auditorium. Sullivan is author of several critically-acclaimed books on one of the country’s most contentious social issues: gay rights. The talk will be followed by a question and answer period and book signing.
“With how prominent gay rights and gay marriage has been as a news topic this past year, it made sense to invite someone so particularly qualified to outline the issues,” said Shannon Hooker, assistant director for programs and marketing, university union. “We hope students will take this opportunity to interact with Mr. Sullivan, to examine their beliefs, and to understand why someone believes opposite to themselves.”
Sullivan is the recipient of National Magazine Awards for Reporting, General Excellence and Public Interest, and was an Adweek Editor of the Year. He stirred controversy with his widely influential critique of the Clinton health-care plan and the first publication of Charles Murray’s The Bell Curve, his pioneering coverage of gay rights, the Supreme Court and affirmative action, and his acclaimed reporting on the Bosnian War.
Sullivan’s work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and Esquire, among other publications. He has appeared on Meet the Press, Face the Nation, Nightline, Crossfire, C-SPAN, The Charlie Rose Show, MSNBC and CBS Evening News. Currently, he is editor of andrewsullivan.com and an essayist for TIME Magazine.
Sullivan wrote the landmark Virtually Normal: An Argument about Homosexuality, an in-depth discussion on the subject of gay rights. He also edited a companion volume, Same Sex Marriage: Pro and Con, A Reader, and published a collection of essays, Love Undetectable, that forms an impassioned plea for diverse audiences to acknowledge the humanity of AIDS and to view friendship as an integral element in our society.
Tickets are free for UNCW students, faculty and staff, and $6 for the general public. To reserve tickets, call the Kenan Auditorium Box Office at 910/962-3500, or 800/732-3643 outside of the Wilmington area. Ticket office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
