Wilmington, N.C.- The University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Leadership Lecture Series along with the Center for Leadership Education and Service will present author Karen Armstrong and a discussion of her book The Battle for God: Fundamentalism in Christianity, Judaism and Islam at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25 in Kenan Auditorium.
With her book, Armstrong calls attention to the profound similarities between Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The talk will be followed by a question and answer period and book signing.
“Religion, like politics, is a hot button for some. Unfortunately, this often limits dialogue about a topic of central importance in many people’s lives,” said Shannon Hooker, assistant director for programs and marketing, university union. “Ms. Armstrong opens a dialogue on one aspect of three major religions, the fundamentalism that has sometimes been expressed as violence by members of all three faiths.”
Armstrong is a former Roman Catholic nun and instructor at London’s prestigious Leo Baeck College for the Training of Rabbis. She is author of the international best-seller The History of God. Other books include Jerusalem, The Gospel According to Woman, Holy War, Muhammad and The Battle for God: Fundamentalism in Judaism, Christianity and Islam (A Short History). She also played a key role in Bill Moyer’s PBS series on religion.
Tickets are free for UNCW students, faculty and staff and $6 for the general public. To reserve tickets, call the Kenan Auditorium Box Office at 910/962-3500 or 800/732-3643 outside of the Wilmington area. Ticket office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
