Wilmington, N.C.—The University of North Carolina Wilmington broke ground Thursday, Oct. 28, for a Cultural Arts Building to house the Visual and Performing Arts.
This $32 million building is the third and final bond issue-financed stand-alone classroom facility. UNCW received $109 million of the $3.2 billion bond issue passed in 2000. The final structure will house the university’s music and arts and theatre departments.
A special feature of the building will be a 300-plus seat recital hall, the only one of its kind built specifically for music performance in Southeastern North Carolina. Another feature will be a secure, dedicated art gallery with a storage and preparation room.
Chancellor DePaolo said at the groundbreaking that “UNCW has been doing award-winning work in music, art and theatre, and our graduates also do well. However, I recognized when I first arrived at UNCW that the fine arts have not been given the attention and resources they deserve to take a leadership position in our community, state and nation. Part of the reason is that the two fine programs were squeezed into space too small for a growing number of students and space not designed to accommodate the specialized requirements of art, music and theatre education.”
Iron sculptures, created by the Sculpture Studio under the direction of Professor Aaron Wilcox, were cast at the groundbreaking while the UNCW Brass Choir, directed by Chris Ackerman, performed Aaron Copeland’s Fanfare for the Common Man.
