Wilmington, N.C. – Meeting in Chapel Hill today, the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina approved a new enrollment growth funding model that could result in more than $7 million in recurring dollars for UNC Wilmington. The new model establishes a minimum threshold of state funding that should be made available to each of the campuses on an appropriations per FTE basis.

The recommendation was contained in the 2005-07 budget request of the Board of Governors for the University of North Carolina that was approved today for forwarding to the General Assembly for action during the spring 2005 session.

UNCW Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo called this action “great news,” and said it was “an enormous step in assuring and advancing the quality of UNC Wilmington.” She also lauded the efforts of Robert Warwick and Hannah Gage, former UNCW trustees and now members of the Board of Governors from Wilmington, for their hard work in helping their fellow governors understand funding models that always left UNCW at the bottom of state dollars spent per student.

The budget request also included recommendations for $10 million in enrollment growth funding for UNC institutions for clinical teaching and nursing hours. Essentially, the action would increase the level of funding for courses already being delivered which would impact UNCW’s Watson School of Education and the School of Nursing.
