Wilmington, N.C.—Environmental sociologist Robert Bullard will be the featured speaker for the UNCW Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20 in Kenan Auditorium. This lecture is sponsored by the UNCW Office of Campus Diversity and is free and open to the public. Bullard is the Ware Distinguished Professor of Sociology and director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University. He is widely recognized for his work on environmental justice and race and the environment. Bullard is also one of the planners for the First and Second National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit.
Bullard is the author of more than 10 books addressing environmental justice, environmental racism, urban land use, facility permitting, community reinvestment, housing, transportation, suburban sprawl and smart growth. His most recent book, Highway Robbery: Transportation Racism and New Routes to Equity, was published in 2004 by South End Press. His Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class, and Environmental Quality, in its third edition, is a classic work in the study of the effect of environmental policies on low income and minority populations.
