Wilmington, N.C. – First Secretary Hekmat Karzai, Embassy of Afghanistan, Washington, D.C., will launch the 2005 Great Decisions foreign policy lecture series at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He will speak on “Reconstruction and Democratization in Afghanistan” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18 in Kenan Auditorium. The lecture is free to faculty, staff and students. The public is invited to attend the lecture at a cost of $12 or to participate in a private dinner, reception and the lecture from 5:30 to 9 p.m. for $75. Registration is required by Thursday, Jan. 13 by calling 910/962-3195.

Karzai will speak about the rebuilding and democratization of Afghanistan. He participated in the historic Constitutional Loya Jirga, Afghanistan’s grand council, which ratified a new constitution resulting in the country’s first popular election.

Karzai was appointed first secretary to the Embassy of Afghanistan in May 2002. He is cousin to Afghanistan’s first popularly elected president, Hamid Karzai. Born in Kandahar, Karzai fled with his family to the U.S. during the Soviet invasion. He earned a bachelor of arts in political science and a master’s degree in information technology from the University of Maryland at College Park. He currently serves as a fellow at the Edmund Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. As first secretary, Karzai oversees daily political and congressional affairs for Afghanistan. As the embassy spokesperson, he appears on major news programs and speaks at major educational institutions.

Prior to his work at the embassy, Karzai worked with the International Organization for Migration to bring college-educated Afghans back to Afghanistan to help rebuild. He was also the Washington representative for the Afghan Global Unity Council, an international non-governmental organization (NGO) seeking to restore women’s rights and defend basic human rights. This followed his work for another NGO, Children of War.

The public is invited to be part of the audience during the taping of UNCW-TV’s “The World at Large” with Karzai. Taping is at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19 at Leutze Hall; the price is $10 per person. DVDs of the show will be available for $25. To register for the taping, call 910/962-3195.

Eight additional lectures are scheduled for successive Tuesday evenings to highlight today’s most significant, far-reaching foreign policy issues. UNCW Great Decisions Program will feature international experts discussing issues on U.S. intelligence, Russia, outsourcing jobs, China, Sudan’s crisis in Dafar, global poverty gap, Middle East and global water issues. These lectures are free and open to the public.

The series is cosponsored by the UNCW Department of Political Science and Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies.
