Wilmington, N.C. – Pat Hingle and Betsy Palmer will donate their talent when they perform the play Love Letters Monday, Feb. 14 to benefit the Theatre Department of the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
Pat Hingle, a Carolina Beach resident, made his Broadway debut in 1953 in End as Man. Hingle’s more famous film appearances include his role as Commissioner Gordon in Batman Forever, the hanging judge in the 1967 movie Hang ‘Em High with Clint Eastwood, and his role as Warren Beatty’s father, Ace Stamper, in Splendor in the Grass.
Betsy Palmer, originally from East Chicago, Ind., first gained recognition for appearances on the TV game shows What’s My Line? and I’ve Got a Secret. Palmer is perhaps most famous for her role as Mrs. Pamela Voorhees in Friday the 13th.
Love Letters, a play by A.R. Gurney, traces the relationship of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner. Ladd and Gardner are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Through their letters and a brief love affair, the couple show how long-lasting true love can be.
The play will take place Monday, Feb. 14 at the City Stage Theatre downtown. Doors open at 6 p.m. and curtains rise at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold through Kenan Auditorium box office at UNCW. General seating tickets are $50 per person and table seating is $75 per person. Contact Kenan Auditorium at 910/962-3500 or 800/732-3643 for ticket information and sales.
A chocolate and coffee reception with Hingle and Palmer will follow the show.
