Feb. 2, 2005

Wilmington, N.C. – If you are a senior or the parent of a high school senior expecting to go to college in the fall of 2005, you can get help applying for financial aid at a special session from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, Feb. 19, at Bear Hall on the campus of University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Close to 30 financial aid and computer assistance professionals are expected to be on hand to help parents and high school seniors accurately complete the on-line Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms. There is no charge to attend this session. Parents should bring their 2004 tax returns.

The event at UNCW is one of 30 being held simultaneously across the state on college campuses and community centers sponsored by the College Foundation (CFNC) and the North Carolina Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.

UNCW’s Financial Aid & Veterans Services Office, along with volunteers from area high schools and community colleges, will host FAFSA Day. Students and their families will have the opportunity to meet with college financial aid officers to receive assistance in completing and electronically submitting their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms. The FAFSA must be filed to apply for federal financial aid for college and for other scholarships and grants. Most families complete the forms in approximately one hour at FAFSA Day.

Students may register for FAFSA Day by calling 866-866-CFNC or by signing on to the CFNC website at http://www.CFNC.org, clicking on the “CFNC Events” icon and following the sign-up instructions. Students can attend any one of the 30 sites; it is not necessary that the student plan to attend the college hosting the event.

Participants should bring the student’s and parents’ federal 1040 tax forms for 2004 to the FAFSA Day program. It will be helpful (though not required) for each student and a parent to obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the Department of Education Website, http://www.pin.ed.gov/ prior to FAFSA Day. Experienced financial aid professionals will be available to answer all questions and concerns about the FAFSA filing process.

For more information about FAFSA Day or other services provided by CFNC, contact your school counselor, visit www.CFNC.org or call CFNC at 866-866-CFNC.
