Wilmington, N.C. – Bob Edwards, one of the most celebrated broadcast journalists alive today, speaks at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Kenan Auditorium. Join Edwards as he brings to life the major stories covered by Edward R. Murrow, one of the most distinguished figures in the history of broadcast journalism.
Edwards will be available for a dressy dinner at UNCW’s Madeline Suite prior to his 7:30 p.m. speech. A ticket for just the dinner, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., is $40. Enjoy a ticket for the dinner and the main address for $50. The price for the speech only is $15. Call 910/962-3195 for reservations.
Edwards will discuss his recently published book Edward R. Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism. Edwards demonstrates how Murrow helped establish broadcast journalism and reminds his audiences how far most broadcast news has fallen from the reportorial standards set by Murrow and the people he hired at CBS. Edwards covers the Blitz, bombing raids over Berlin, the liberation of Buchenwald and red-baiting by Senator Joe McCarthy, as well as the ups and downs of Murrow’s career at CBS.
Listen as Edwards reminisces about his own career and talks about his new role as host of The Bob Edwards Show, on XM Satellite Radio. Previously he hosted National Public Radio’s Morning Edition for 25 years, attracting more than 13 million listeners weekly.
