UNCW hosts saxophone masters for performance and lecture

Wilmington, N.C. – The University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Music welcomes saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix, saxophonist William Street and pianist Roger Admiral for two appearances Wednesday, Feb.16.
As part of the 2004 Guest Artist Series, Street and Admiral will perform on saxophone and piano at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Servant, located at 4925 Oriole Drive, Wilmington. This concert will include contemporary selections, most notably a first time touring performance of Andriy Talpash’s, Side B – Adjusted. Then at 7:30 p.m. in Kenan Hall, Room 114 on the UNCW campus, Londeix and Street will give a master class presentation and lecture. Admission to both events is free; however, seating is limited for the master class and lecture.
Londeix’s lecture, to be given in French and translated into English by Street, is entitled “De l'importance expressive des attaques - ou les transitoires polymorphes du son” (The Expressive Importance of the Attack—or The Polymorphic Transients (Or Distinct, yet Integrated Parts) of the Sound.) The Washington Post has called Londeix “The most revered of French saxophonists."
Londeix has become known and appreciated as a concert artist, teacher, lecturer and author of numerous pedagogical works. He has performed more than 600 times as a concert soloist appearing in cities around the world, many times inaugurating the first saxophone concerts and recitals in many of the world's concert halls. About one hundred of the most important works for saxophone have been written for and dedicated to him. More than 130 foreign students have traveled from around the globe to study with him at the Bordeaux Conservatory of Music, among them 47 Americans.
Street is a faculty member at the University of Alberta where he teaches saxophone and chamber music and directs the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. He has appeared as soloist with the Edmonton and Milwaukee symphonies, the Orchestra Filharmonica Marchigiani the Orchestra de Camara del Nuevo Mundo, the Chicago Festival Orchestra and the United States Navy Band. Street is the winner of many awards including the Certificat d'Aptitude de Saxophone, France's highest recognition of excellence in music performance and pedagogy and has earned respect as one of America's finest instrumentalists.
Canadian pianist Roger Admiral graduated with a Doctor of Music degree from the University of Alberta. His main teachers include Helmut Brauss, Peter Smith and Virginia Blaha. Roger's repertoire extends from the music of J. S. Bach to the music of today, with a particular focus on modernist composition. Roger lives in Camrose and performs in Canada, the United States and Europe, most recently playing a series of solo recitals in Poland.
