Wilmington, N.C. – As part of the 2004-05 Artist Recital Series, the University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Music presents a recital by saxophonist Frank Bongiorno at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 17 in Kenan Auditorium. This concert highlights three world premiere pieces for saxophone and chamber ensembles written by John McDonald, Shih-Hui Chen and Howard Frazin, as well as an arrangement of Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche for saxophone and woodwind quintet and a performance of an arrangement of Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf featuring the UNCW Woodwind Quintet.

UNCW faculty members pianist Karen Rice and cellist Richard Thomas will perform as well as Bongiorno, the UNCW Faculty String Quartet and Woodwind Quintet.

The Saxophone Journal has called Bongiorno “an excellent saxophonist who has the magic to tell stories through his saxophone performance. Not only does he tickle the listener's ear, but he fires up the imagination and stirs the soul." Bongiorno is an active recitalist, orchestral soloist, jazz artist, and clinician throughout the United States and abroad. In addition to his solo performances, Bongiorno is a member of the Ryoanji Duo, a saxophone and classical guitar duo with guitarist Robert Nathanson. Bongiorno is a professor of music and chair of the Department of Music at UNCW where he has been teaching saxophone as well as jazz studies since 1982.

General admission tickets are $5; UNCW students are admitted free with a valid ID. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit UNCW and are used to support the Department of Music through scholarships for UNCW music students. For ticket information, contact the Kenan Auditorium box office 910/962-3500. For concert information, call 910/962-7416.
