Wilmington, N.C. – “UNCW Creates,” a new rotating art exhibit in the University Union Living Room, highlights student work from six classes from the University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Art and Theatre including collage, pottery, graphic design, intaglio and costume design. The exhibition opens Monday, March 7 and runs through Monday, April 18. This rotating exhibit is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by UNCW Presents and the University Union Arts Committee. The University Union hours of operation are 7 a.m. – 12 a.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturdays, and 1 p.m. – 12 a.m. Sundays.
Every two weeks, two new classes will be highlighted in the University Union Living Room gallery. This exhibit was designed to give the UNCW community a chance to see and experience creations from the studio art classrooms and an overall sense of the variety of artistic mediums being taught in the department. Each part of the exhibit is designed to feature three-dimensional art in conjunction with two-dimensional art.
Collages, displayed by students of Pam Toll, will be on display through Friday, March 18 in conjunction with ceramics, created by students of Aaron Wilcox and Vikki Smith, which will be on display through Friday, April 1. “Collage” is an upper level studio class where students use their knowledge of design elements and principles in a process similar to painting. Vikki Smith’s “Beginning Ceramics” class focuses on ceramic art-making with emphasis on manipulating the material with hand-building techniques, including introduction to ceramic art history and technical issues including glaze application and firing practice. Aaron Wilcox’s “Advanced Pottery Class” focuses on an in-depth investigation of form chosen by the student.
Graphic designs by students in Ned Irvine’s courses will be on display from Friday, March 18 through Friday, April 1. Student projects focus on the graphic expression of form through two-dimensional compositions to communicate information, concepts and emotions.
The exhibit will conclude work of students creating intaglio, instructed by Donald Furst, and costume design, instructed by Melonie Mortomor, from Friday, April 1 through Monday, April 18. The exhibition of intaglio, a printing process, will include wood engravings, copperplate engravings and mezzotint. Costume design is part of the theatre department and will be exhibiting at the same time. The students’ pieces will show the process and techniques used in rendering and developing an individual aesthetic and design.
