Wilmington, N.C. – Clarinetist Michael Waddell, pianist Barry Salwen and guitarist Robert Nathanson, faculty members at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 in Kenan Auditorium. General admission is $5; UNCW students are admitted free with a valid ID.

The ensemble will perform Leonard Bernstein’s “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano,” Alban Berg’s “Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano,” Carl Maria von Weber’s “Grand Duo Concertant” and Daniel Kessner’s “Six Aphorisms for Clarinet and Guitar.”

As clarinetist for the world famous Dukes of Dixieland, Waddell toured worldwide. His two solo CDs, Defining Moments and Not From Concentrate, received positive reviews. Waddell has also been awarded two Jazz Composer Fellowships from the N.C. Arts Council as well as two Regional Project Artist Grants from the United Arts Council. Mike returned to his hometown of Wilmington in 2003.

Salwen is an international concert pianist, giving performances and master classes in the U.S., Europe, Israel and Asia. One of his nine CDs is the first recording of the complete piano music of the American master Roger Sessions; he is the first artist to record all of these works. He has participated in a Fulbright Summer Seminar on Jewish history in Germany, which took him across Germany.

Nathanson is an active recitalist, orchestral soloist and ensemble performer giving concerts throughout the North America and Europe. A champion of new music, he has commissioned, premiered and recorded works by David Kechley, Michael Ruszczynski, Ernesto García de León, Leo Brouwer, and Ernesto Cordero. He has been touring as part of the Ryoanji Duo and the North Carolina Guitar Quartet since 1992.

Proceeds from ticket sales benefit UNCW and are used to support the Department of Music through scholarships for UNCW music students. For ticket information, contact the Kenan Auditorium Box Office 910/962-3500. For concert information, call 910/962-7416.
