Jazz guitar ensemble to perform

Wilmington, N.C. – Guitarist Bob Russell will direct the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s jazz guitar ensemble (“Wire Choir”) for a performance at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 31 in Kenan Auditorium. General admission is $5; UNCW students are admitted free with a valid ID.
The “Wire Choir” is comprised of students currently enrolled in the Department of Music’s jazz studies program. The group consists of four guitarists (Wes Hunter, Justin Johnson, Chris Luther, and Shaun Mahoney) a bassist (Chris Morris) and a drummer (Justin Heter). The ensemble will play from a selection of jazz pieces by well-known composers such as Dizzy Gillespie, Cole Porter and Pat Metheny.
Russell has taught jazz guitar at UNCW since 1995. A professional guitarist since the early 1970s, he has played and recorded with a number of renowned musicians and entertainers, including Henry Mancini, Don Menza, Joe Derise, Kenny Davern, Slide Hampton, Bob Hope and many more. He has been featured as a guitarist on major motion picture soundtracks, award-winning television documentaries, and television and radio commercials. His theme music for the BET documentary “Hard Road to Glory,” based on the book by Arthur Ashe, won a Freedoms Foundation Award.
